Will Claye produced the third-best triple jump in history Saturday at the USATF So Cal Open Jim Bush Championships with a second-round effort of 59 feet, 6.25 inches (18.14m) at Long Beach State’s Jack Rose Track.

RESULTS

Claye, who became the sixth male athlete in history to surpass 18 meters (59-0.75), improved on his previous-best 58-9.25 (17.91) from the USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento. It was the only fair jump in the series for Claye, who opened his outdoor season May 18 in France with a 57-1 (17.40m) performance.

Christian Taylor, who ranks second all-time at 59-9 (18.21m), had been the only male jumper since 2015 to surpass 18 meters with his 59-5 (18.11m) at the 2017 Prefontaine Classic.

Claye and Taylor continue to chase the 1995 world record of 60-0.25 (18.29m) held by Jonathan Edwards.
